MINORS' ACCESS OF LIBRARY MATERIALS POLICY

October 21, 2024

In compliance with South Dakota Codified Law (SDCL) 22-24-56, the Rapid City Public Library does not collect materials found to violate SDCL 22-24-27(11).

According to the library’s Registration Policy, children under the age of 18 may obtain a library account if a parent or legal guardian accepts responsibility for the child’s use of materials in the library.  Per the Registration Policy and the Computer Use Policy, parents or legal guardians may also determine their child’s use of library computers, and by doing so accept responsibility for what their child accesses online.

In compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act, the City of Rapid City Information Technology Department maintains a technology protection measure (internet filtering) on the library’s computers and wireless network.

Children under the age of twelve must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver over the age of 14 (Rules of Conduct Policy).

Library staff are not responsible for the supervision of children in the library.  Parents, legal guardians, or caregivers over the age of 14 must assume responsibility for their children’s access to and use of library resources.
